gcsoVery few books make me feel like they were written for me. Gianrico Carofiglio’s novel entitled Il Silenzio dell’onda (The Silence of the Wave) is one of them. I reluctantly finished it last night and felt almost immediately a deep sense of loss. It tells the story of Roberto, a former undercover policeman seeking psychiatric help. And, although this summary feels like an ‘elevator pitch’ (a concept I loathe) and I would happily dedicate several pages on this blog to the story, I won’t write any more about the plot, for fear of spoiling the reader’s pleasure. This is a book to be savoured, not just for its lean, elegant style, but for the way the author delves into the psyche of his protagonists. I could have followed Roberto’s journey the space of another novel… or even two and miss this character already. Needless to say, my next read is also a book by Gianrico Carofiglio…
